Discovery of Warm Gas in the Center of the Virgo Cluster with EUVE

(the following information provided by Dr. Pierre Chayer)

Drs. Richard Lieu, Jonathan Mittaz, Stuart Bowyer, Felix Lockman, Chorng-Yuan Hwang, and Jurgen Schmitt performed an observation of the central region of the Virgo Cluster with the EUVE deep survey telescope. A point source and and extended emission halo were clearly detected. It is the first detection of cluster gas emission in the EUV. Dr. Lieu and his collaborators show that the emission cannot be interpreted by the cluster gas at X-ray temperatures and propose a second gas component with temperature between 5E+5 and 1E+6 K.
